Another day, another concert – this time it was Dermot Kennedy in Zurich at X-TRA. While he’s been filling up arenas and stadiums worldwide, Dermot decided to take things down a notch and play a few smaller, more intimate venues for this run.
X-TRA was packed, and with the heat of the crowd, it felt more like a sauna than a concert hall. But honestly, that was to be expected. Before Dermot took the stage, we were introduced to support act Grace Enger. A rising singer-songwriter with a warm voice and heartfelt songs that perfectly set the tone for the night.

A Living Room Vibe on Stage
Dermot Kennedy got on stage around 08:20 (early shows, me likey!) and immediately transformed the venue with his setup and energy. The stage resembled a cozy living room, decorated with old lamps and instruments, creating a stripped-back and homely atmosphere. The whole evening carried a sense of intimacy that reminded me of his 2018 show at Papiersaal. The difference this time? Dermot’s stage presence has improved immensely. Though he still comes across a bit distant, not much audience interaction. Barely any eye contact… It somehow works for him now. His quiet confidence draws you in, and every so often a genuine smile flickers across his face. It kinda shows just how grateful he is to be up there.
Dermot Kennedy’s Voice Pierces the Soul
If there’s one thing that hasn’t changed, it’s Dermot Kennedy’s voice! It is still absolutely incredible and powerful enough to pierce straight through your soul. Some songs were performed with keys, violin, and bass (was it an upright bass? I’m no instrument expert), adding a lush layer to the sound. But for me, the true highlights of the night were when it was just Dermot and his guitar. Stripped down to the essentials, his voice and lyrics carried all the emotion and weight needed to fill the room.
Highlights and a Look Ahead to Baloise Session
Of course, “Power Over Me” hit hard and had the crowd singing along at full volume. But his newer songs, including “Often, Lately,” were super nice. It proved that his upcoming material will resonate just as strongly as his past hits. The evening felt both powerful and deeply personal, leaving me curious about his upcoming show at Baloise Session. If he brings the same intimate setup there, it might just be the perfect setting to enjoy his music in a stripped-down, acoustic way.
