Another Day, Another Concert, this past Monday we got to see Kelvin Jones in Zurich at Papiersaal. And what a night it was! For those who might not know him, Kelvin is a Zimbabwean-British singer-songwriter who first stole our hearts back in 2015 with his hit single “Call You Home.”

I’ve had the absolute pleasure of following his journey since the very beginning – from cozy living room shows and spontaneous tram concerts to international adventures in NYC and Georgia. It’s been a wild ride, and watching his evolution over the years has been so much fun!

Before Kelvin took the stage, we were treated to a soulful and powerful performance by the talented Jazz Wade, who set the tone perfectly for the evening.  Check him out if you can!

Then came the moment we’d all been waiting for – Kelvin stepped onto the stage, this time with a full band behind him. While I’ve always loved seeing him perform solo, just him and his guitar or piano, there was something magical about hearing his music come alive with the energy of a full band.

Exploring Roots and Evolving Sounds

Over the years, Kelvin’s sound has certainly evolved. He’s been diving deep into his roots, incorporating Afrobeat rhythms and new textures into his music – and loving every second of it. While he still delivered fan-favorite pop hits, it was amazing to hear him showcase his newer material. His stage presence is still incredible, and whether or not Afrobeat is your thing, it’s impossible not to dance when he’s up there doing his thing. You can feel how much he’s grown – not just musically, but as a person too. It’s like watching someone truly come into their own. I felt like a proud mama seeing him up there. Wait no, I’m not old enough to be a mama – let’s say, a proud older sister 😀

A Bittersweet Announcement – The End of an Era

Midway through the show, Kelvin dropped a bit of a bomb: this would be his last tour as “Kelvin Jones.” While “Kelvin” is his real second name, “Jones” was a made-up stage name. Now, as he finds his true sound and embraces his identity fully, he’s ready to move forward under his real last name – Mupani. I absolutely love this for him. This rebranding isn’t about starting over – it’s about finally stepping fully into who he is. I have no doubt Mupani will go on to do incredible things, and I’ll be right there cheering him on.

Still the Same Guy – Just No More Skinny Jeans

It had been around six years since Kelvin Jones in Zurich last happened, so it warmed my heart to see such a great turnout. He might be switching up his fashion style and musical direction, but at his core, he’s still the same guy I met back in 2015 – just a little more grown-up (and without his skinny jeans 😄). After the show, he took the time to greet every fan, snap photos, and crack silly jokes like always. I won’t spill the tea on all the wishes he shared with us, but I will say this: it was a pleasure to witness Mupani, fka Kelvin Jones, live on stage. I can’t wait for the next chapter – and his next show!
